A team of U.S. engineers and researchers have developed a laser surgery probe which targets individual cancer cells.

This "microscalpel" can destroy a single cancerous cell while leaving nearby cells intact.

According to the lead researcher, Assistant Professor Adela Ben-Yakar at The University of Texas at Austin, a cell is removed using high precision in 3-D without damaging the cells above and below it, and at the same it, with the same precision, you can see what you are doing to guide your microsurgery.

Optometrist John Karickhoff has first heared about laser surgery for floaters when on vacation in Florida; skeptical to begin with, he sat in on a surgery performed by Fort Myers ophthalmologist Scott Geller and later allowed Geller to operate on his eye, as he had what he called "a whopper" of a floater in his own eye. The procedure was a success.

And not long after, Karickhoff began performing the procedure himself. Both Geller and Karickhoff have since operated on thousands of patients.

H. L. Milne, MD of Columbia - South Carolina, presented his experience in using the Moria Epi-K to perform Advanced Surface Treatment, a variation Epi-LASIK, in which the epithelial sheet is discarded, at the 5th International Congress on Epi-LASIK, LASEK, and Advanced Surface Ablation.

In a study of 100 eyes treated with the Epi-K, visual recovery was significantly faster than that cited by IntraLase consultants in their clinical assessment of wavefront-guided PRK performed using the Durrie Technique.

New Varicose Vein Procedure Tested

A new laser surgery system is being tested that delivers laser energy through a catheter. Duke University Medical Center vascular surgeons are working to treat varicose veins without invasive surgical procedures.

This procedure is so minimal that typically patients are walking within hours after the procedure. The current recover time based on the traditional procedure can involve a six week period of downtime where the treated veins are physically "stripped" out of the leg.

OmniGuide Fibers and Laser Surgery Showing Developments

A new laser technology coming out of MIT uses what is called "perfect mirror" technology. What this laser system is able to do is to send a laser beam through extremely thin and flexible type of optic fiber in order to treat tumors and diseased tissue through minimally invasive surgery.

The fiber is know as OmniGuide fiber, and is licensed through MIT's Technology Licensing Office. At Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston last October, thoracic surgeon Dr. Raphael Bueno used the fiber in conjunction with the laser therapy to shrink a patient's cancerous lung tumor by 90 percent.

Carbon dioxide lasers (CO2 Lasers) have long been used to surgically remove diseased tissue in the larynx, throat, intestines and other locations. However .. getting the lasers farther into the body has always been the problem. To get in deep, so to speak .. typical invasive surgery was required.
