Combining the Newest Non-Surgical Procedures Gives Patients Maximum Rejuvenation with Minimum Recovery

/24-7PressRelease/ - Los Angeles, CA, May 26, 2005 - Two of the most exciting and groundbreaking procedures to hit the Anti-Aging scene are now being administered in combination at Marina Plastic Surgery, a Southern California medical center focusing on rejuvenation and cosmetic enhancement. Fraxel, a nonablative laser treatment that improves skin texture, tone and coloration and ThermaCool, a "face-lift" treatment that uses radio frequencies instead of incisions to tighten skin and revitalize faces, are now being offered together to achieve synergistic benefits.

On their own, these treatments harness the latest advancements in light- and radio-energy aided facial rejuvenation. Not only do the procedures provide excellent results, neither requires traditional surgery. There are no incisions, no sutures, and no long recovery periods. Both treatments target mid-level and deep skin layers to stimulate collagen regeneration, tightening slack skin, smoothing wrinkles, improving skin tone and minimizing or erasing skin discoloration.

What is Photodynamic Therapy or PDT?

Photodynamic therapy or PDT is a laser or light treatment that is used in combination with a type of drug called a photosensitizer or photosensitizing agent. Effectively patients undergoing PDT, are injected with the photosensitizer. The photosensitizer is then absorbed by cells throughout the body. The key is that in cancer cells the photosensitizer remains longer than it does in normal cells.

The photosensitizers are then exposed to a specific wavelength of light, which causes these chemicals to produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells.

Dr. Rokhsar presented his study results at the 25th Annual Meeting of American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) held in Orlando, Florida, last month. He reported that 50% of his subjects experienced significant improvement in the texture, color and overall appearance of their acne scars, while 80% of study patients reported at least moderate improvement in their acne scars.

Researchers develop new method for facile identification of proteins in bacterial cells

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have developed a new method for identifying specific proteins in whole cell extracts of microorganisms using traditional peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF).

The key to the new method, according to the researchers, is a "shortcut" for preparing samples that makes PMF faster and more economical. By reducing the cost of protein identification, they believe PMF can become an economical tool for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of microorganisms used in environmental cleanup.
