Understanding The Fetoscopic Placental Laser Therapy

Twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a disease of the placenta (or afterbirth) that affects identical twin pregnancies, affecting twins sharing a common monochorionic placenta.

The transfusion causes the donor twin to have decreased blood volume and the recipient twin becomes overloaded with blood. This excess blood puts a strain on this baby's heart to the point that it may develop heart failure. Regardless of the therapy chosen, the majority of TTTS survive and majority of survivors will be normal. However, the various treatments available do differ in their outcomes: the number of survivors, the number of healthy survivors, and the ability to prolong pregnancy.

Is Laser Surgery The Best Answer for Sleep Apnea?

Snoring, a problem which afflicts millions of people and their partners, occurs when there is obstruction of the free flow of air through the passages of the back of the mouth and nose. This is most often caused by excessive tissue in the uvula and soft palate. Since snoring can be a sign of a more serious condition such as sleep apnea, patients should be fully evaluated by a qualified physician prior to any treatment.

What Is Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty?

The LAUP (Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty) procedure is an out-patient surgical procedure under local anesthesia involving several sessions spaced several weeks apart. Treatments reduce and reshape the uvula and posterior soft palate in order to enlarge the oropharyngeal airway by trimming and reshaping the uvula and posterior soft palate. Less tissue is removed than by the UPPP surgery.

People who snore may have sleep disordered breathing including sleep apnea and other medical problems. These issues should be addressed before surgery and there should be evaluation of sleep quality by a trained sleep specialist both before and after surgical treatment. LAUP has not yet been demonstrated to be effective and has been used by people who are not trained in sleep disorders or ENT. Failure to identify and treat sleep apnea can have serious consequences.

Is LHE Photoepilation The Key To Permanent Hair Removal?

Unnwanted or excessive hair is a problem that has been affecting people since early times, regardless of age, gender or origin. Each year, over $10 billion are spent on removing unwanted hair utilizing mostly methods that provide short-term or partial results. The most common and affordable methods of hair removal have traditionally been shaving, depilatory creams, waxing and electrolysis –performed either at home or in beauty centers.

Over the last decade, laser and light based technologies administered by professionals entered the market, setting new standards for hair removal treatment. Although shown to be highly effective in long-term or reduction of hair, these methods are costly –therefore available only to the few able to afford them. Consumers still face the dilemma of choosing between expensive hair removal treatments with long-term results or opting for more affordable removal methods with short-term results.

Side Effects of Laser Eye Surgery

All laser vision correction surgeries work by reshaping the cornea, or clear front part of the eye, so that light traveling through it is properly focused onto the retina located in the back of the eye. LASIK laser eye surgery (laser in-situ keratomileusis) is one of a number of different surgical techniques used to reshape the cornea.

Laser surgery, which can cost thousands of pounds, is increasingly popular but experts have warned that patients undergoing laser eye surgery are not being told about the risks they could be taking with their sight.

Complications Of Laser Surgery

What is a laser? A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can selectively transfer its energy into tissue to treat the skin. Lasers contain a material that produces and amplifies light. Many procedures cannot be done without the laser. Likewise, many procedures are better performed without the laser. Even with the sparkle, pure color, and high-energy beam, the laser is not always the best tool for surgery. The choice of using a laser or other surgical methods is carefully made by the facial plastic surgeon. Your surgeon has the preference to consider the results, the possible complications, and the alternatives.

Understanding Laser Peripheral Iridotomy

A laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) is performed almost exclusively for patients with narrow angles, narrow angle glaucoma, or acute angle closure glaucoma. Aqueous fluid is made in the ciliary body of the eye, which is anatomically situated behind the iris. The aqueous fluid primarily escapes the eye by flowing between the lens and iris of the eye, and then drains via the trabecular meshwork, which is located in the angle of the eye (where the front clear cornea meets the iris, essentially).

Retinoschisis is a genetic eye disease that splits the retina, the light-sensitive layer of cells lining the back of the eye. It occurs in two forms, one affecting young children, the other older adults. Both forms usually affect both eyes, though one eye may be worse than the other.

If the split retina involves the peripheral or side retina, peripheral vision is lost. One is also at risk for a retinal detachment. But more commonly, retinoschisis affects the macula, the area of the retina responsible for central vision. In this location, one loses central vision.
