Photodynamic Rherapy for Cosmetic Treatments
Photodynamic therapy or PDT is a non-invasive treatment that uses a laser or light energy, a solution for people who suffer from acne, sun damage or skin cancer. PDT was initially used to treat actinic keratoses (AKs), the earliest stages in the development of skin cancer. As the photodynamic therapy treatments became refined, it expanded to provide patients with a safe, non-invasive treatment option for acne, sun damage and potentially basal and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common forms of cancer in the world.
Dermatologist Arielle N.B. Kauvar, M.D., clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine in New York City, has discussed,at the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, how dermatologists are using PDT to treat a variety of medical and cosmetic skin conditions.

New Laser for In-home Acne Treatment
According to medical experts, nearly half of adult women will have acne at some point. Dermatologist, Dr. David Goldberg, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine explains: "We used to think that acne was predominately a problem of the teenage years. You get it when you are 12 it disappears when you’re 20 and that’s the end of it. What we’ve now come to realize is, is that acne in the 20 to 45 year old range is probably even more common than it is in adolescents and the reasons are clear, life is incredibly stressful now, there are all kind of changes in our lives, those stresses bring on acne."

Laser Treatment For Hemangiomas
Hemangiomas are the most common tumor of infancy and childhood, affecting approximately 10% of infants by the age of 1 year. The diagnosis can nearly always be made by the patient’s history and findings on physical examination.
Prior to the classification system outlined by Mulliken and Glowacki, the natural course of hemangiomas was poorly understood and treatment was inconsistent, ranging from benign neglect to deforming surgical intervention. However, with an improved understanding of the natural course of hemangiomas, as well as advances in anesthesia, laser technology, medical therapy, and surgical methods, an aesthetic approach to facial hemangiomas was developed by the senior author Edwin F. Williams III, MD.

Evolving Trends in the Treatment of Vascular Birthmarks
Newswise — The September/October issue of Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals, contains several articles on the current state of knowledge and experience with vascular birthmarks, which are caused by blood vessels that do not form correctly. Vascular birthmarks can be internal, or form an external birthmark and can be disfiguring, especially if formed on the face.
In an editorial accompanying the articles, Marcelo Hochman, M.D., of The Facial Surgery Center, Charleston, S.C., writes that more than 400,000 infants in the United States are born with a vascular lesion, including hemangiomas (which include "strawberry" or "raspberry" marks and port wine stains) and various malformations.

Can Laser Treatment Help With Rosacea?
Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. Often referred to as "adult acne," Rosacea may begin as a tendency to flush or blush easily, and then progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. It also may involve the ears, chest and back. As the disease progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area; however, unlike acne, there are no blackheads.

Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing - the safest?
The skin is the largest organ in our bodies. It protects us from infection and shields us from harmful substances. However, effects of the sun, wind, time and hormones begin to show. Surface irregularities such as pigment discolorations and acne scarring may also occur.
The Erbium laser is the latest advance for the treatment of aging and sun-damaged skin. The Erbium laser provides a safer, more accurate and less painful method of restoring softer, smoother, more youthful-appearing skin. In most cases, patients can have their procedure performed in the doctor's office and be home that same day.

What are the benefits of Laser-Toning?
As a child, your skin was soft and smooth. Over the years, the sun, wind and toxins have taken their toll and your skin is showing signs of aging. Fine lines have begun to form around your lips and eyes. As the collagen that supports your skin wears out, deeper lines and grooves appear in your brow and next to your nose, down to the corners of your mouth. Now you are looking to reverse the years of wear and tear on your skin.
Lasers have given the surgeon more control and made skin resurfacing safer and more predictable. However, laser resurfacing still exfoliates the protective outer layer of skin, which may require bandages and a lengthy recovery period.
